Daniel C. Stillson (1826-1899), a machinist at the Walworth Company, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, created the first such adjustable wrench.

On October 12, 1869, U.S. Patent No. 95,744 was issued to Stillson.
On August 17, 1888, Swedish inventor Johan Petter Johansson (1853-1943) registered his first patent for the adjustable pipe wrench.

The Swedish Patent Office issued the patent (SE 5636) again in 1894. The idea came after he founded his company Enköpings Mekaniska Verkstad. Johan Petter Johansson invented the adjustable wrench (Swedish wrench) shortly after, who in 1890 agreed to distribute his tools worldwide.
Back then, pipe sizes were poorly standardized, so every time a professional went to work, he had to take with him a set of wrenches, a whole tool cart, to open and close a single pipe/bolt. Johansson’s tool was able to grip pipes of different sizes very tightly.
At the beginning of the 20th century, a revolution began in tool manufacturing. The ability to create one tool that is sufficient for a large number of execution options. To this day, together with technology, we continue to improve and produce the same tools with the same idea, only in different designs, in order to not only save space in the toolbox but also during work (performance).
It must be said clearly that since 1860 until today, the key to the pipe has not changed at all. So,

today,

As you can see, there is not much difference. We have been using the same pipe wrench for over 160 years. Of course, there have been attempts to make it easier with different sizes, different styles of wrenches, different angles, but still 95% of the world’s production will focus on
In the form and functionality of the venerable Mr. Stillson’s key since 1860.
Many manufacturers around the world have worked hard since 1990 to come up with an easier and more convenient solution, but each solution has encountered many difficulties, both in the product manufacturing process and in the performance results, compared to the traditional key. And if anything has succeeded, the manufacturing process has been very expensive, costing 5 times the original key.
A little about prices: which only refer to the product, a professional pipe wrench manufactured to the standard JSA – JIS B 4606. (It is important to note that most production today does not refer to the standard) The current price in 2022 for a 10″ / 250 mm pipe wrench in a standard standard. Between $12 and $65. A significant difference between the prices is mainly due to the great difference in the manufacturing process that allows the use of cheap materials to the most complex. (A pipe wrench is mainly made of two different components: jaws and thread, a handle). For example:
1. Carbon steel 0.5% carbon (tool steel) including CRV coating will cost about $15
2. Carbon steel 15% carbon including CRV coating will cost about $25
3. Carbon steel 15% carbon including CRV coating with a good reputation for the product (a brand with a long product life) will cost about $65
The development center at B-Tech Tools spent a lot of time, effort, and thought, trying many different things to create a new pipe wrench that could truly replace the old one from 1860.
After almost 3 years of creative thinking , B-Tech Tools has succeeded !!! Pay attention !!!
- A quick pipe wrench that includes a lifetime warranty .
